Linday Lay and Sammy Shelor - Taking The Crooked Road Home
(Virginia Folklife Program - VFHCR106) released 2007
Taking the Crooked Road Home unites one of bluegrass music's sweetest voices with one of its most celebrated banjoists. Vocalist and bassist Linda Lay, from Bristol VA/TN, has been delighting audiences for years, fronting such groups as Appalachian Trail and Springfield Exit. Sammy Shelor, of Meadows of Dan, Virginia, is a blistering banjo master, and leader of legendary Lonesome River Band.
Joining them for this celebration of the Southwest Virginia style of traditional bluegrass is Ron Stewart on fiddle, David McLaughlin on mandolin and David Lay on guitar. The lead and harmony vocals are superb, and the material draws from some top bluegrass writers - Tom T. and Dixie Hall, Harley Allen, Mike Evans and more.
